Portugal and Algarve Golf Vacations and Packages
When you think of playing golf in Europe, naturally you think of Scotland, Ireland and Spain. Now you can add a forth fabulous country to that list; Portugal. There are hundreds of top-notch courses to experience with very attractive rates along with a variety of accommodation styles, excellent dining options, fine wines, shopping and other outdoor activity adventures. Flights into Portugal are easy and the year round warm weather makes it an obvious choice when winter hits. There are 3 golf regions in the country: The North featuring the Porto Area, the centre which surrounds the capital of Lisbon and the south known as the Algarve with the exciting cities of Faro, Vilamoura and Lagos.
North – Porto: The country’s second largest city, Porto is full of interest and rich in history. This is a city of traditions where ancient roots have been preserved with pride. Yet, this is probably the most creative and innovative place in Portugal, very impressive modern architecture lives next to the old quarters like the fabulous Casa da Musica ("Music Hall") or the Contemporary Museum of Serralves. Golf is not as popular in this part of the country but hidden gem courses can be found along the coast and in the hills.
Central – Lisbon: This region can be summed up by these words: countryside, vineyards, sea and authenticity. You will find ancient Churches and Monasteries, 15th century forts, Roman villages and much more. The city of Lisbon is a fantastic mix of old and new with exciting neighbouring cities such as Sintra and Cascais. The golf is great on courses like Campo Real, Bom Sucesso, Golden Eagle and the incredible Praia D’El Rey.
South – Faro: Known as the home to great Portugal golf, this region has something for everyone. From great beaches, fishing towns, historical sites, shopping, hundreds of dining choices, nightlife and much more, it’s a must-stop on your trip. Many of the Algarve courses are located on or close to the water and vary in price and design. Must play courses include Monte Rei, Victoria GC, San Lorenzo, Gramacho and Vale Do Lobo. Expect tight greens, rolling fairways and prevailing winds. But you’ll also receive great service and value for your dollar.
**Keep in mind that handicap certificates are mandatory on Portugal courses. Generally a maximum handicap of 36 for the ladies and 32 for the men is preferred.
