Since the legendary Donald Ross designed his first North Carolina course more than 100 years ago, this State has become a golfer’s paradise. Today, nearly 600 courses bearing the names of golf’s most noted architects are spread across some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll find anywhere on whether on a mountaintop or oceanfront, shadowed by towering pines or towering skyscrapers.
Even the professionals like this place with the PGA TOUR hitting the State with 2 annual tournaments in Charlotte (Wachovia Championship) and at Greensboro (Chrysler Classic), the CHAMPIONS TOUR also plays the Greater Hickory Classic in Conover (just outside of Charlotte) and the NATIONWIDE TOUR plays at Cary each year. Hidden gem regions include the Charlotte area with fabulous courses like Ballantyne Resort GC, The Tradition, Charlotte Golf Links and Skybrook. The Wilmington / Sunset Beach area on the coast is an affordable alternative to Myrtle Beach with courses like River’s Edge, Oyster Bay, Lion’s Paw and Sea Trail Resort.
The Raleigh / Durham area is a wonderful sports mecca with NHL Hockey, several top universities like Duke, Wake Forest and UNC but is also known for great golf courses such as Preserve at Jordan Lake, UNC Finley GC and Governor’s Club.
But the golf centre of the State lies at Pinehurst and Southern Pines. With award-winning classics like Mid-Pines, National GC, Pine Needles, Tobacco Road and Talamore it’s a must play.
